Two cultures. One silk scarf. Made in Ukraine, designed in collaboration with Indigenous artist Brianna LaPlante.
The Story Behind This Scarf
When I first moved to Canada, I went to my first powwow in 2023. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing — Ukrainian scarves, worn by Indigenous people. I just stood there. That moment never left me.
I kept going to powwows, kept listening. Elders shared stories about the connection between Indigenous and Ukrainian peoples that I had never heard before. The more I listened, the more I wanted to create something that honoured all of it.
Then one night I was on a call with friends in Ukraine — talking about the war, the blackouts, how hard it is for Ukrainian businesses to survive. The factory that made this scarf was one of them.
I reached out to artists, and Brianna LaPlante — an artist with Anishinaabe, Nehiyaw, and Michif roots — was one of the first to reply. We started talking, sharing, creating. And together we made this pattern.
Fifty scarves. 100% silk, made in Ukraine, by people who needed this. Designed by an Indigenous artist who poured her culture into every line.
This isn’t just a scarf. It’s two peoples, two histories, and a belief that art and connection are worth fighting for.
